 A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM      Dartmouth 2007.

SEE PHOTOS

In 2007 I was invited by The Inn Theatre Company to design and make the costumes of the Faerie Court for their wonderful production of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, presented al-fresco at Dartmouth Castle.   The talented cast members would also be joined by some of the beautiful young ballerinas of the Linda Goss Ballet School. Linda, formerly of the Bolshoi, ex teacher of the Royal Ballet (among many other companies!) would be choreographing a piece for members of her school to perform. Principal dancer would be Lizzie Busby, formerly of the Royal Ballet School and Birmingham Royal Ballet. In total I created 28 costume designs representing the mythology and magic of Faerie, wrote a sub-plot for Linda to choreograph for her ballerinas and taught a little Rune lore to Oberon!      This fine, fun filled and heart-warming performance touched many hearts… including my own.. Many great friendships blossomed, the acting and dancing talent grew from strength to strength, threads of synchronicity wove their magic through the production and the play became a  piece of  Faerie that will stay with me for many years to come….

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM    Exhibition 2007

As part of Dartmouth’s week long celebration of Shakespeare, and as costume designer for the production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, I was asked to organise, present and construct an exhibition about the play; the Faerie lore, mythology and magic that I had represented within the costume concept and Faerie art…… all of my passions!  Each costume had a mythological basis within Faerie lore, Runes, Ogham, flower and tree mythology etc. The exhibition gave me the opportunity to explain the magic and wonder of Faerie to a wider audience; show the biographies of some of the cast, crew and  Ballet; also to display some wonderful Faerie art by myself and fellow artists.     I was deeply moved by Wendy Froud’s kind permission to use any of the images from her book ‘The Art of Wendy Froud’, and her support for the exhibition. She is a true Queen of Faerie and a shining light within the genre! Long may she reign!!  My fellow tea-drinking pal, the lovely Faerie artist, Linda Ravenscroft (along with her daughter Vivien) came to the production and, as the make-up concept had been inspired by her art, it was great to show some of her work too!

In October 2007 I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the first Faeriecon! Many of the world’s finest Faerie artists were there, fabulous bands, mythological and art discussions and lectures, Good Faerie and Bad Faerie masquerades, new friends and great company! (Thanks Faerie fabric artist Wendy and Ken Feldman for the photos!)
